Cape Town – A 10-year-old girl will swim from Robben Island to Blouberg to raise R2 million for the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust.
Abriella Bredell will swim freestyle on December 15 from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand.
The Grade 5 pupil from Victory Christian School in Jeffreys Bay wants to prove to the world that dynamite definitely comes in small packages.
Abriella will take on the legendary Robben Island Channel crossing, which is one of the toughest open-water swims in the world.
If she makes it she would be the youngest participant to complete the 7.9km swim.
Cold water, sharks, swimming through a busy shipping lane, big swells and wind-whipped seas are some of the challenges awaiting her.
“ I am a very competitive person and enjoy swimming races against other people, and improving my times,” Abriella said.
She chose Red Cross Hospital as the beneficiary of her swim because she is moved by the work they do.
“It is hospital where kids can go and they are helped in the best way that they can be helped. I am very excited and I know that I will finish the swim, but I am most excited to raise money for the hospital,” said Abriella.
Her crowdfunding campaign has so far raised R43404.82.
